Nova Egmont is a modern serif font revival designed by Francisca Lopes, Miguel Moreira, and Pedro Correia in 2020, based on the original Egmont typeface designed Sjoerd Hendrik de Roos in 1930.
The biggest challenge of this exercise was to perform a significant “customization” of the font without distorting the original reference. Initially, manual and digital sketches were made — especially the connections with the serifs—, preserving the generic structure of the typeface.
Excerpt from the group’s final specimen presentation
The Regular weight was the first to be drawn (…) During the design process, several optimizations were made on the characters, trying to find the most harmonious solutions, privileging text readability…
This was one of the most complete typefaces produced in 2020, covering all western European languages (missing only the “ij” ligature to work in the Dutch language), with 3 weights and one sans-serif (display) variant.
