Suggia is a didone serif typeface for general use. Designed and implemented by Marta Saraiva, Francisca Barros, Helena Barradas, and Margarida Tavares, Suggia font is characterized by the vertical axis, the narrow serifs, drop endings, and its great contrast.
Suggia owes its name and design as a tribute to the famous cellist from Porto, Guilhermina Suggia (1895-1950), one of the first women to be internationally recognized and considered a world exponent of this instrument. The typeface aims to typeface allegorically reflect the constituent parts of the cello, such as the snail, the curves, the spike, and the effects, as well as the female silhouette.
Designed and implemented as two-axis variable font, it varies in weight and [was later modified as a separate] serif shapes.
The typeface also possesses a few tongue-in-cheek details, such as context-specific dingbats. See the full specimen booklet here.
