Butique

Student: Roberta Miranda
Classification: Hybrid Display Serif – Modern/Rational with Transitional & Flare-Slab Influences
Variation Axis: Serif Shapes (and optical Size)

Butique is a hybrid serif display typeface created by a student in the 2024–25 Typeface Design course at FBAUP. Developed from the Foundational Hand and drawing from Gerrit Noordzij’s stroke theory, the project introduces students to the logic of typographic contrast and modulation through a balance of vertical stress and moderate stroke differentiation.

Classified as a Modern/Rational display serif with pseudo–slab serif flair, Butique features flare-wedge shaped terminals that lend it a unique presence between the Transitional and Slab Serif styles. Inspired by the elegant expressiveness of Ghofey Regular, it aims to balance retro sophistication with contemporary charm, making it suitable for branding, invitations, book covers, and decorative applications.

Its structural robustness, with uppercase heights of approx. 750px and lowercase at 530px, ensures high impact in headline and display settings, though it sacrifices subtle detailing when scaled down for body text or captions.
